Shelter In-Place COVID-19 Blog August 2021

California issued shelter in-place orders on Tue Mar 17, 2020. I have been logging the highlights and lowlights. Aug started fast which slowed down at the end. Local and state governments are aggressively responding to the number of cases increasing due to the delta variant. More children tested positive with the virus.

Sun Aug 1. Total US cases surpassed 35 million. Total CA cases surpassed 4 million. CA is the first state with 4 million cases. Total US deaths 616,800.

Mon Aug 2. 70% of US adults received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The 70% goal was 29 days late after President Joe Biden's goal of 70% vaccination on Jul 4.

Flight delays and cancellations increased because there are too many passengers, not enough airline employees, and unseasonal thunderstorms across the country. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported 2.2 million people flew on Sun Aug 1 which was the highest day during the pandemic.

China shutdown Wuhan due to delta variant outbreaks. Mass testing began.

Kaiser Permanente officials announced all employees must be vaccinated by the end of Sep.

Tue Aug 3. Most Bay Area counties health departments to officially announce mask mandates for all indoor settings regardless of vaccination status.

Multiple groups of parents in multiple school districts filed lawsuits to stop mask requirements in schools.

New York City requires a Key To NYC Pass proof of vaccination for indoor activities such as dining, fitness, and entertainment. The requirement begins on Sep 13. 72% of positive samples were the delta variant. Cases increased 24% from one week ago.

Wed Aug 4. Pizza day. I purchased pizzas at Tony & Alba's and Pizza Guys. I shopped at Costco at the 5pm hour.

Total COVID-19 cases surpassed 200 million globally.

Thur Aug 5. Employees working for the County of Santa Clara and City of San Jose are required to be vaccinated or be tested two times a week.

Fri Aug 6. 50% of the US population are fully vaccinated according to the Center For Disease Control (CDC).

Sat Aug 7. US daily infections surpassed 100,000. The last time it happened was Jan 2021 when daily infections surpassed 250,000. Daily infections in Jun 2021 was 11,000. Daily deaths averaged 500. Jul 2021 daily deaths averaged 270. Jan 2021 daily deaths averaged 3,500.

Wed Aug 11. Governor Gavin Newsom announced all employees at public and private schools must be vaccinated or be tested weekly. CA is the first state in the nation for the requirement in schools.

Stanford Hospital doctors saw an increase in children hospitalizations. A majority of the children has the delta variant. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported 16 states with at least 100,000 pediatric cases.

Thur Aug 12. San Francisco requires proof of vaccination for specific indoor activities including restaurants, bars, and gyms. The requirement starts on Fri Aug 20. People ineligible for vaccines are excluded.

Fri Aug 13. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved booster shots for immunocompromised patients. The CDC approved the FDA's approval.

Wed Aug 18. San Francisco opened a high volume testing site. 500 tests per day. Appointment only. There is a 24-48 hour wait for testing results.

The CDC, US Health and Human Services, and National Institute of Health outlined planned to administer booster shots beginning on the week of Sep 20. The initial people qualified for the booster shots are health care workers and nursing home residents.

Air quality advisories and red flag warnings issued for the next three days due to the CA wildfires. The household closed all windows today.

Mon Aug 23. The FDA approved the Pfizer and BioNTEch COVID-19 vaccine in full. The vaccine is marketed as Comirnaty.

The Pentagon requires all military who work and live closely together in barracks and ships to be vaccinated. The anticipation date requirement is middle Sep.

Wed Aug 25. The CDC data showed the US averaged 303 pediatric cases per day which was 1.8% of total hospitalizations.

Thur Aug 26. The TSA reported 1.4 million traveled on Tue Aug 24 and 1.5 million traveled on Wed Aug 25. The two numbers were the lowest since 2.2 million on Aug 2 and the lowest since May.

Fri Aug 27. The US Supreme Court overturned the CDC and President Joe Biden's eviction moratorium. The court ruled they have no authority. States and cities Biden's eviction moratorium took precedence over federal orders.

I shopped at Costco from 12pm to 1pm. Warehouse was dead.

A Spare The Air alert was issued today ending on Sun Aug 29 due to hot temperatures and the wildfires.

Japan suspended 1.63 million Moderna vaccine because of contamination found in unused vials in multiple vaccination sites.

A Florida judge ruled Governor Ron DeSantis can't ban schools imposed mask mandates on students and staff. The governor executive order and rule were unconstitutional.

Mon Aug 30. The European Union removed the USA off the safe travel list. Nonessential travel was subject to restrictions when visiting. Travelers must be vaccinated.

The San Francisco mayor announced 80% of eligible residents are fully vaccinated.

Tue Aug 31. 80% of eligible residents in CA received at least one dose.
