Throwback Blog: I Remember These Tragedies Forever

Blogger’s Note: Throwback blogs are blogs from my past. I start posting past blogs reflecting what I wrote. It's like my "A Second Look" blogs for which I give myself feedback.

Today's throwback blog is titled I Remember These Tragedies Forever in May 2014. Tragedies happen every day. Today's information age people are informed any tragedies big or small. A sad part is some big tragedies happened in the past are small tragedies in the present. Which of the following tragedies below if they happen today are still big? Which of the following tragedies below if they happen today are small?

Here are some tragedies which made the top stories nationally or globally. I remember where I was and what I did when I heard of the news.

Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting, Dec 2012. I read the news from a friend's Tweet. I turned on the television minutes later. All major networks covered the shooting.

Michael Jackson Died, June 2009. My Facebook timeline was filled with "MJ RIP", "Michael Jackson is dead", and the like status. All media including radio and internet focused their attention on Michael Jackson.

Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, LA, Aug 2005. I visited my friend who lived in Washington. I heard of the evacuations on a radio inside a bookstore at Port Orchard, WA. I saw the destruction on television when we visited Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

9/11, Sep 11, 2001. My alarm clock broke. I called my co-worker telling him I'm coming to work late. He asked me if I heard the news. I responded with an answer work related. He corrected me saying the Twin Towers in New York City, NY blew up. I went to the television minutes later confused. The pictures showed the whole story.

Columbine Shooting, Apr. 1999. I turned on the news radio going to work. I said to myself, "What the f*ck!"

Operation Desert Storm, Jan 1991. A friend I called told me we attacked Iraq in response to Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait. He found out from another person at a local park.

Loma Prieta Earthquake, San Francisco, CA, Oct. 1989. I studied Algebra I in my room.

The World Is Having Too Much Fun

I remember I had too much fun in my early to mid 2000s. Bad things happened. If I had too much fun on a vacation, then something bad ruined the vacation. The too much fun is happening today. Too much fun is too distracting. The world is losing focus. There are more bad things. Fun must be checked. Watch less TV. Reduce screen time. Minimize eating junk food. Get physical honestly. Get more sleep. I started to keep my fun in check since Jan 1, 2019. I'm going back to the fun in check attitude from the early to mid 2000s. I keep my fun in control. I hope there are less chances something bad happens.

How Much Patience Does A Person Need?

Leo Tolstoy wrote a short story titled "How Much Land Does A Man Need?" The spoiler answer is six feet deep. How much patience does a person need? A person searches for a job. A person recovers from an addiction. A person waits for a marriage proposal. A person works after a deadline to complete a project after setbacks. A person continues taking high school classes to graduate beyond four years. A person receives treatment for an illness. There are many time formulas for many people. No one formula applies to every person. My answer is subjective. Every person waits a subjective amount of time. Patience is case by case.

My Notes Shopping For A New Desktop Monitor

My Samsung T260 25.5 inch LCD monitor malfunctioned on Aug 2018. The monitor displayed poor quality images; however, there was a smell from the rear vents. I purchased the T260 for $450 on Dec 2008.

My new monitor is a Samsung U28E590D 28 inch UHD 4K monitor. I purchased the E590D on Black Friday 2018 for $250.

I want to share my research notes to help anyone shopping for a new monitor.

*First check. Confirm your desktop's graphics card can display 4K or 3840x2160 resolution if the user wants a 4K monitor.

*Minimum monitor size is 27 inches for 4K. Minimum monitor size is 24 inches for FHD or 1920x1080 resolution or 1080p.

*Monitors with tilt adjustment and/or height adjustment are advantages. My E590D has a tilt adjustment.

*Thin bezels are attractive.

*G-Sync technology is for Nvidia graphics cards. Free Sync is for Radeon graphics cards. G-Sync and Free Sync are Adaptive Sync technology. They eliminate screen tearing on a visual artifact when a monitor displays multiple frames at once. It occurs when the number of frames is sent to the display. Refresh rate is not a factor.

*Latency or response time 5ms or less is good.

*27 inch or greater recommended for curve monitors.

*IPS stands for in-plane switching. PLS stands for plane-line switching. IPS and PLS are the same for most users. The differences are for specific needs such as gaming or color-critical work deeper blacks and accurate colors.

*PPI stands for pixels per inch. Horizontal pixels divided by vertical pixels. The higher the PPI, the smaller the pixel pitch.

*HD or 720p is 1280x720. FHD or 1080p resolution is 1920x1080 16:9. WQHD or 2K resolution is 2560x1440 16:9; also called WideQuad or QuadHD or QHD. 2K cinema is 2048x1080. UWQHD is 3440x1440 16:10; also called Ultra WideQuad. UHD or 4K is 3840x2160 21:9. 4K cinema is 4096x2160. 5K is 5120x2880. 4K means four times shaper than 1080p.

*sRGB is 90% of NTSC. sRGB for Adobe RGB settings are 5,000-7,000 color temperatures and 1.8-2.4 gamma presents.

*LED is better than LCD. There are LCD monitors in the market. LCD have better backlighting. OLED or Organic LED is the latest visual display technology.

*HDMI cable carries both video and audio. A 4K UHD the video is 30 frames per second or 30fps.

*Display Port cable carries both video and audio, too. The video is high resolutions and high frame rates. A 4K UHD the video is 60 frames per second or 60fps.

*Refresh rate is times per second the monitor updates the image. A 120Hz display refreshes the image 120 times per second. The higher refresh rate, the smoother movements any actions appear. 60Hz is good for most users.

*Twisted Nematic or TN is worse than in-plane switching or IPS which has better colors and best view at most angels. Vertical Alignment or VA is not the same as IPS. VA has better contrast and better image depth.

*Brightness is measured as cd/m^2 or nits. 200 nits is good. 300 nits is brighter for better colors and contrast.

*24bit color display 16.7 million colors. 24bit is good for most users.

*Watch 4K videos on YouTube to test a 4K monitor display.

*Always shop around. If you can wait to buy a new monitor, then wait. Prices go down in time. For example, a Samsung 28 inch 4K LED monitor was $580 in Jan 2015. I watched a YouTube video on my new monitor. The person on the video dated 2016 paid $400. I paid $250 for my Samsung 28 inch 4K LED monitor in Nov 2018.

2018 Christmas Holiday Firsts: Stress, Cowardness, Comfort Food

The 2018 Christmas holiday is remembered in a negative way. Stress, cowardness, and eating comfort food were first time experiences. I was depressed, too. The last time I experienced Christmas depression was high school.

Stress. I understand the stress during the holidays. Personal stress staying strong. Family stress for which some family members don't get along with others. Financial stress seeing prices going up. I think about 2018 too much bad luck and too much bad timing.

I was happier being alone. I minimized human contact. I minimized family contact. I craved intelligent conversations. I craved meaningful conversations. I craved sincere human interaction.

Stress was contagious. I blogged on Sun Oct 21 titled Instant Bullets Blog Oct 21, 2018 stress is contagious the Center for Disease Control (CDC) should designated stress an infectious disease. Experiencing stress during the holidays was bad timing.

Coward. I experienced for the first time why people leave. I experienced for the first time why people run away. I experienced for the first time why people escape. I was happier being alone.

I dreamed I was at my cousin's upcoming wedding. My family and I sat at our assigned table. I excused myself. I went to the bar. I ordered a Coke. Coke?!? Then I ordered any white wine. I was a tropical depression. I didn't want to spoil people's fun. I didn't want to depress my family. I politely walked away.

Comfort Food. I experienced for the first time why people eat junk food to comfort. I experienced for the first time why people drink alcohol beverages to comfort. I included alcohol beverages in the category. Comfort food helped me forget my worries. Comfort food helped me destressed. Comfort food was my depressant. Comfort food is delicious--in an unhealthy way. Comfort food didn't solve problems for which I realized oddly.

*Two San Francisco Giants Past Away Late 2018. Radio play-by-play announcer Hank Greenwald past away on Oct 22, 2018. I remember one broadcast when I was in high school. It was a rainy day. I was bored. I listened to a Giants game against the San Diego Padres lying down on the carpet. Time passed by listening to Greenwald.

Willie "Stretch" McCovey past away on Oct 31, 2018. The hall of fame first baseman was the most beloved Giants player. McCovey's career statistics include 521 home runs, 1,555 runs batted in, and 2,211 hits. An infamous at bat took place in the 1962 World Series Game 7 bottom of the ninth inning against the New York Yankees. The score was 1-0 in favor of the Yankees. Willie Mays on second base. Matty Alou on first base. McCovey hit a line drive directly to the second baseman Bobby Richardson. If McCovey hit the ball anywhere else, then the Giants won the 1962 World Series.

*Catching Up What I Missed. I have been catching up what I missed in my younger years. I seek new adventures and experience new experiences. I just realize learning new job skills is included. New work knowledge. I can't explain why. The catching up new career skills started in Aug 2014. I continue catching up everything I missed to the day I die.

*Good Marketing Buy Condoms.

*Australia Mesh Drains.

*Another Example Of Bad Luck. I was at my local tire shop getting my tires rotated and balanced. An Uber driver customer brought his car for tire repairs. One of his tires drove over four screws. Three out of four tires are serviced. The fourth tire is not serviced. It was the fourth tire which drove over the four screws. He must pay full price for the replacement tire. He told me he drives 150 miles a week Ubering.

The Uber driver story reminded me dad, mom, and I driving to my brother's house. My dad was cut off four times from four different drivers on four different roads on one trip.

*Professional job networking organization seeks experienced web developer. How ironic an organization helping people find jobs needs a volunteer to help with their web page. PHP coding experience is required. There are people without experience needing a job to get experience. Catch-22.

*Giving A Little Bit. I donated to City Team Ministries and Second Harvest Food Bank helping the poor. I'm unemployed; however, I'm in a better position to succeed. I have better odds to find a job.

*The Cat In The Hat. The book by Dr. Seuss is on my wish list.

*2019 Changes In Bay Area Sports. Jan 2, 2019. The second day of the new year. There were changes. NBC Sports Bay Area didn't renew senior analyst Ray Ratto's contract. The San Francisco 49ers announced Greg Papa is the new radio play-by-play announcer. Former radio play-by-play announcer Ted Robinson is reassigned.

*#tylerstrong Former Purdue student Tyler Trent died from bone cancer on Jan 1, 2019 at the age of 20. Trent inspired the Purdue Boilermakers football team. I heard of #tylerstrong for the first time watching the Boilermakers upset the Ohio State Buckeyes on Oct 20, 2018. Click link for a full story from ESPN.

*Mostly Clique Lessons From The Rich. Here's a YouTube video on the 15 Things Poor People Do That The Rich Don't. One thing may be enough to improve your life. It's the first time I heard of Alux.

Pics Go Back To 2018

Workers be grateful if your company still provides free drinks. Small cars not worth the lower prices. Mall pictures include a parking structure and renovations. The job market is still tough. Costco upgrading their warehouse stores with an actual floor. The NBA Champions Golden State Warriors is the best NBA team today. Add medical supply stores to your list of places to shop. Peace is found in a Japanese garden.
