Permanent Changes Due To COVID-19 Is Another Change Reference Point In Time

California Governor Gavin Newsom shut down California 2,107 days ago on Tue Mar 17, 2020. People reference many permanent changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 permanently changed *fill in the blank*. Schools. Colleges. Job searching. The hiring process. Work environment. Shopping. Contracts. Human relations. Governments. The financial system. Entertainment. Professional sports. Technology.

There are many historical reference points changing everything. The points I know are the following: the airplane, World War II, President Richard Nixon got the USA off the gold standard, the internet, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and COVID-19. There are more historical reference points changes coming soon.

A common knowledge is time changes everything--almost everything. The typical life is the same. A person is born. His or her parents raise their baby. Go to school. Graduate high school. Some graduate college or a trade school. Get a job. Get married. Raise a family. Retire. Death. Repeat. The circle of life.

However, the world changes. Humanitity changes. They are guaranteed. Generations change. Out with the old. In with the new. Let's hope future generations change for the better. Systems change. Processes change. Rules change. Opinions change. Time will tell the change is good or the change is bad. We connect the dots backwards. Forecasting or predicting is bullshit. The forecaster or predictor must sell with confidence to make it come true. Time is the ultimate judge.

Today's throwback blog is titled I Remember These Tragedies Forever in May 2014. Tragedies happen every day. Today's information age people are informed any tragedies big or small. A sad part is some big tragedies happened in the past are small tragedies in the present. Which of the following tragedies below if they happen today are still big? Which of the following tragedies below if they happen today are small?

Here are some tragedies which made the top stories nationally or globally. I remember where I was and what I did when I heard of the news.

Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting, Dec 2012. I read the news from a friend's Tweet. I turned on the television minutes later. All major networks covered the shooting.

Michael Jackson Died, June 2009. My Facebook timeline was filled with "MJ RIP", "Michael Jackson is dead", and the like status. All media including radio and internet focused their attention on Michael Jackson.

Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, LA, Aug 2005. I visited my friend who lived in Washington. I heard of the evacuations on a radio inside a bookstore at Port Orchard, WA. I saw the destruction on television when we visited Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

9/11, Sep 11, 2001. My alarm clock broke. I called my co-worker telling him I'm coming to work late. He asked me if I heard the news. I responded with an answer work related. He corrected me saying the Twin Towers in New York City, NY blew up. I went to the television minutes later confused. The pictures showed the whole story.

Columbine Shooting, Apr. 1999. I turned on the news radio going to work. I said to myself, "What the f*ck!"

Operation Desert Storm, Jan 1991. A friend I called told me we attacked Iraq in response to Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait. He found out from another person at a local park.

Loma Prieta Earthquake, San Francisco, CA, Oct. 1989. I studied Algebra I in my room.

My 9/11 Day

Today is the 10th anniversary of 9/11. I share my 9/11.

I woke up late because my alarm clock broke. I jumped up from bed immediately and called my coworker telling him I arrive late and I’m not sick. Here was the phone conversation:

Me: Hey, Larry. I’m sorry I’m going to be late to work. My alarm clock broke.
Larry: Did you hear what happened?
Me: Ummm, the CEO resigned?
(My company experienced internal executive problems.)
Larry: The Twin Towers exploded.
Me: Uh, okay. I’m leaving now.

Honestly, it took me time to digest what happened. I went to the family room and turned on the TV. Holy shit! I saw smoke coming out of the Twin Towers. Each television station broadcasted the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. I was in denial. I said to myself, “No way terrorists on USA soil.” Terrorists were on USA soil, and they carried out their attacks.

The commute to Downtown San Jose was the fastest ever. The traffic was as light as Super Bowl Sunday. It took me ten minutes to arrive at work. The office was dead silent. There were no more than ten brokers out of 50+ in the office. Most of the staff were at the workstations. I completed little work in the database.

The managing partner emailed the entire office to inform everyone the office closes early. All the staff were released at 3pm. The commute home was the fastest ever, too. 10 minutes to arrive home. I remembered the afternoon DJ for 106.5 FM said “God Bless America” and played Pink Houses by John Cougar Mellencamp.

The rest of the day I watched television and worked on my next update for my webpage. The update was a page devoted to September 11, 2001.
