California issued shelter in-place orders on Tue Mar 17, 2020. I have been logging the highlights and lowlights. Positive rates continued to increase. All governments issued no long-term mask mandates. Monkeypox was in the news. The May month was faster than Apr.
Mon May 2. Completed local errands post office, Nob Hill, and Target.
Tue May 3. Completed local errands Nob Hill and AAA insurance first thing in the morning. More people were maskless outdoors.
Wed May 4. The Center For Disease Control (CDC) recommended masks on all public transportation despite a federal judge struck down the federal mask mandate for public transportation.
The first US COVID-19 death was Feb 29, 2020; although, multiple reports stated doctors revised a past death certificate the first US COVID-19 death was Jan 9, 2020. Coroners found earlier instances of COVID-19 deaths. 100 US COVID-19 deaths on Mar 17, 2020. 5,000 US COVID-19 deaths on Mar 31, 2020. 10,000 US COVID-19 deaths on Apr 4, 2020. 100,000 US COVID-19 deaths on May 23, 2020. 500,000 US COVID-19 deaths on Feb 21, 2021. 1,000,000 US COVID-19 deaths on May 4, 2022.
Secretary Of State Antony Blinken tested positive for COVID-19. Blinken was fully vaccinated and boosted. Mild symptoms.
Thur May 5. San Mateo County was one of the first counties in CA to build a test and treatment center. The location was the College Of San Mateo. People could get tested and get medications if qualified.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 15 million people died from COVID-19 worldwide. The 15 million included people impacted by overwhelmed health systems; for example, cancer patients unable to get treatment at a hospital full of COVID-19 patients. Most of the deaths occurred in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
The Food And Drug Administration (FDA) limited the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to the rare risk of blood clots. Adults who couldn't get another vaccine or specifically requested Johnson & Johnson vaccine could get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The clot forms within the first two weeks. There is no worry afterwards.
Mon May 9. The City Of San Jose reinstated mask mandates for city workers effective Fri May 6 for two weeks.
Wed May 11. North Korea locked down acknowledging a COVID-19 outbreak. The leader Kim Jong Un wore a mask in public. Experts said North Korea might be seeking outside aid.
Thur May 12. COVID-19 cases increased in CA. San Francisco county's positive rate 9.4% was one of the highest in the state. Hospitalization rates were low.
North Korea reported six people died and 350,000 people treated for COVID-19. One of the six deaths was infected with omicron.
Fri May 13. All Bay Area counties had the highest infection rates in CA. Officials said case numbers are likely higher because home testers don't report their positively rates. Counties asked everyone to wear masks indoors and get vaccinated and boosted if eligible.
Mon May 16. The federal government offered residents up to eight COVID-19 rapid antigen tests shipped free via the United States Postal Service.
Tue May 17. The FDA authorized the Pfizer booster shots for children ages 5-11. The booster shot was administered at least five months after the second shot.
Thur May 19. The CDC recommended the Pfizer booster shots for children ages 5-11. The booster shot was administered at least five months after the second shot.
Fri May 20. I watched the San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants from the 8th inning to the 10th inning.
Berkeley Unified School District reinstated indoor mask mandates starting Mon May 23. The previously indoor mask mandate ended on Mar 2022.
Sun May 22. The WHO said the COVID-19 pandemic is not over. 1 billion people in lower income countries haven't been vaccinated. 60% of the world population is unvaccinated. 70 countries reported case numbers increasing.
Wed May 25. Pfizer provided COVID-19 vaccines, medicines, and medical products to treat other diseases and cancer to 45 lower-income countries at not-for-profit prices.
Thur May 26. COVID-19 omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants were detected in South Africa, parts of Europe, and the US.
Sat May 28. CA Governor Gavin Newsom tested positive for COVID-19. Mild symptoms. Newsome was vaccinated and boosted twice. Newsom was isolated. He took the Paxlovid antivirus pill.
Mon May 30. The City Of San Jose extended a city program providing up to $15,000 grants to support small businesses with rent and utilities related to COVID-19 to Jun 30, 2022. The dates the small businesses affected were from Mar 24, 2020 to Aug 19, 2021. The grants are funded from the American Rescue Plan Act. 300 grants are available. The qualifications are the business reside in San Jose, employ fewer than 10 full time employees, and earned less than $3 million in 2020 or 2021.
Tue May 31. Mailed a letter at the post office and shopped for groceries at Costco and Safeway. There were lots of cars entering Costco. There were few shoppers inside the warehouse. Many cars entering Costco drove to the gas station. It must be cars filling up gas after the Memorial Day weekend.
