The San Francisco 49ers From 4-12 In 2018 To 13-3 In 2019

Congratulations to the San Francisco 49ers being the 2019 NFC Champions from a 4-12 (.250) season in 2018 to a 13-3 (.813) season in 2019. Unfortunately, the 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. I share my thoughts for the 2019 season.

*No Experience Necessary. 49ers Owner and President Jed York signed Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch to six year contracts starting the 2017 season. Ownership said to Shanahan and Lynch take your time. Establish the process. Mistakes are allowed. Mistakes must be learned. No one year or two year contract quick fix and quick turnarounds.

Shanahan and Lynch acquired 46 of the 53 players during their three season rebuild. Tight end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner, offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, defensive end Nick Bosa, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw were key draftees. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk, cornerback Richard Sherman, linebacker Kwon Alexander, defensive end Dee Ford, kicker Robbie Gould, and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders were key veteran acquisitions via free agency or trade.

*Big Breaks. Breaks are part of being successful. The big break happened when the 49ers received quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots for a second round draft pick trade in the 2017 season. Good relationships are also part of being successful. The relationship between Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Kyle Shanahan's father Mike Shanahan assisted in the trade.

Garoppolo learned the Shanahan offense system via crash course. He started the last five games of the 2017 season. He won all five games.

*Learn From Your Mistakes. York learned from his mistakes as a young owner and president. Bad choices. Poor public relationships; for instance, a plane flew over Levi's Stadium with a banner to fire York. It's clique. It's true. For example, York fired coaches Jim Tomsula in 2015 who was overwhelmed and Chip Kelly in 2016 who had a big ego. In defense of Tomsula and Kelly, their teams were terrible with little talent. York fired General Manager Trent Baalke being ineffective because all of his draft classes except one year were bad.

Another York learning from his mistakes is stay out of football operations. Let the people you hired run the football operations on the field and off the field. Butt out.

Further, York established the culture "I've got your back." York formed partnerships between owners and coaches, coaches and players, and owners and players. All partnerships are accountable for their actions.

Likewise for Shanahan and Lynch for two losing seasons in their first two years with the 49ers 6-10 in 2017 and 4-12 in 2018. They learned from their mistakes.

*8-8 Record At Best. Most 49ers fans predicted the 2019 season another lost season during the rebuild. I predicted 8-8 record at best. A 13-3 record and a Super Bowl appearance are fantastic.

*Veteran Leadership. Sherman's nickname is "Uncle Sherm." He provided leadership, mentoring, intelligence, and charism.

*No Complaining. Nobody complained. Everyone accepted their roles and their responsibilities. Everyone shared one goal. Win games.

*Depth. The 49ers reserves are reliable. The 49ers second team are dependable. The backups are important to rest the starters. The rotations are set.

*Rebuilding takes time. Rebuild intelligently. It's okay to make mistakes. It's okay to fail. Learn from your mistakes. Fail intelligently. Continue moving forward. Motivation or desire and support are top keys to become successful.

*Another It's Life. We remember the winners. We forget the losers. However, there are exceptions such as Shanahan being the Offensive Coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons blew a 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

My Opinion Super Bowl LIV

The 49ers dominated the game for 53 minutes. Unfortunately, the 49ers ran out of gas physically and mentally thereafter. The Chiefs were the stronger team. The Chiefs took advantage of the 49ers fatigue; in particular, the Chiefs played hurry-up offense in the fourth quarter. Both teams played well.
